Toyota and espnW Team up to Honor Everyday Heroes

On October 3, Toyota and espnW proudly revealed the names of the fifth class of Toyota “Everyday Heroes” at the eighth annual espnW: Women + Sports Summit in Newport Beach, California. This award recognizes and celebrates the individuals who are making a difference for girls and women in their local communities via sports, and come with a grant of $10,000 for each organization that is honored.

This year’s “Everyday Heroes” are:

• Darlene Hunter, founder of Lady Mavericks Wheelchair Basketball in Dallas, TX, which is committed to improving the health and overall well-being of physically disabled women and girls. Founded in 1990, the team has hosted overnight camps for disabled young girls from around the country for the last four years.
• Fartun Osman, founder of Somali Girls Rock in St. Paul, MN, which delivers opportunities to play, soccer, basketball and participate in track and field in a respectful environment designed to make girls from Minnesota’s Somali community feel comfortable.
• Mira Manickam, founder of Brown Girl Surf in Oakland, CA, which is working to create a more diverse, environmentally-conscious and joyful women’s surf community, offering women of color better access to surfing opportunities.

In order to qualify for a grant from Toyota “Everyday Heroes,” a person and/or their organization must have been operating as an active, sports-oriented organization that creates sporting opportunities for girls and women in their community for at least three years and making meaningful, quantifiably-measured impact.
